The Neighbor Boy Experience
At Neighbor Boy, it's not just about choosing a beautiful tree, but about the real spirit of Christmas. We invite you and your family to slow down and take a break from the busy holiday season to dance to the holiday music among our trees.
Diversity and Inclusion
We celebrate and embrace diversity and inclusion at our farm. Because it's the holiday season we think it's important to remember that while many of our customers are celebrating Christmas, like we do, we know that not everyone does. Some of our customers use trees and greenery for other winter celebrations, and if trees aren't your thing, we invite you to stop by to hang out around the fire pit or for some complimentary hot chocolate. *Our farm has uneven ground. If you have a mobility concern about our tree lot, please let us know and we will help you.
Our Hot Chocolate Tradition
Everyone who comes to visit the Neighbor Boy Christmas Tree Lot is offered a complimentary cup of hot chocolate. It's our sweet gift to you! The hot chocolate is a delicious, homemade cocoa....Dave's own secret recipe. But, for those who wonder how it's made, it's simply the perfect mix of Hershey's cocoa, sugar, and dried milk. We top it off with marshmallows for the kiddos and whipped cream and peppermint for the adults. Of course, anyone can ask for whichever they prefer. You can even ask for a second cup! The tradition started almost 20 years ago when Dave walked out to the Christmas Tree lot with a mug of hot chocolate and a customer asked, "hey, where's ours?" He ran back in and prepared them each a mug, and the tradition was born!
Kylan's Kid Corner and our Play Areas
"We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing." Throughout our farm there are several areas for children to play. From slides to toys, a climbing wall, a small ball pit, music walls, sidewalk chalk, cornhole and more! Please enjoy and join in. We ask that all young children be supervised.
Make or Purchase a Wreath
We make our wreaths here on site, so they are always fresh. We'd love to teach you or your children how to make your own wreath. The wreath making stands are back by the tree service station near the parking lot. Feel free to stop by while we are working there, if you'd like to see how to make a wreath. You can purchase your own wreath making experience in the Country Store.
Choosing the Perfect Tree
We've seen families spend hours pondering the perfect tree. Tall, short, fat, thin, many branches, few branches... Our Christmas trees are NC grown fraser fir trees, freshly cut and delivered throughout the season. They are graded at the farm in Ashe County according to USDA standards, and may be graded as Premium, #1, or #2. The grading of the trees does not affect the health or freshness of the tree, but pertains to shape, branch density, taper, etc. Each Neighbor Boy tree is priced based on height and grading, and you can find the price on the tree tag. Once your family finds the perfect tree, please tear off the bottom half of the tag so no one else can select it, and take the tag to the cashier to pay for your tree.
Visit the Neighbor Boy Country Store
One of the highlights of our farm is our Country Store. We offer a variety of local gifts and unique goodness, from candles and soaps to jams and sauces, crafts and ornaments, gifts and stocking stuffers for everyone. When you take your tree tag to the cashier to pay, we encourage you to take a few minutes to browse our store. In addition to gifts, we also stock local honey, Neighbor Boy jams, hot chocolate and treats, and wreaths, garland, and holiday decor.
Carry your tree to the Service Area.
Once you've paid for your tree, take your receipt and go back out and find your tree. Do all the trees look alike? No problem. The number on your receipt will match the number on the top half of the tag still on your tree. We encourage you and your family to get involved in the experience and pick up your tree and carry it over to the service area in the back near the parking lot. If you'd prefer, you can find an employee (in a red shirt) to help you or help carry it over for you.
The Tree Service Area
Now we will get your tree display ready!! If you have your stand, bring it over with you and we will help put it on for you. Don't have a stand? Don't worry, you can purchase one of ours. We give every tree a fresh cut so it will pull up water and stay fresh. We'll cut it for you, or you are welcome to request to cut it yourself. We can also trim up a few branches so it fits nicely in the stand. Next, it's time to shake the tree. We love our tree shakers because it gives the children a chance to dance with their Christmas Tree! We encourage you and your family to step over and help with the shaking! The shaking also helps loosen up the branches, get rid of old needles, and shake out any debris.
Let's Tie the Tree On the Car
And now it's time to tie your tree on your car so that you can get it home safely! The tree tying is a very important part so that it stays on your car and no one gets hurt! We provide twine and will tie the tree for you. We welcome you to jump in and help! Once you get your tree home, please start watering it right away, and don't ever let the bowl dry out. That's the secret to keeping your tree fresh all season long.

We welcome well-behaved dogs! Please make sure your dog is leashed at all times and that you keep them in control and near your family. Not all dogs are kid friendly when out of their comfort zone, and we know that not all kids are dog friendly either. Please clean up after your pet. Thank you!
What is a Premium, Nursery Grade Tree?
We offer a variety of trees from Table Top up to almost 12 ft tall! Our trees are grown in Ashe County, NC by the Shatley family, who have been in the tree farming business for decades. Our top quality fraser trees are nursery grade, USDA premium and #1 trees. (more info can be found through the USDA website and the American Nursery and Landscape Association website) We also have a very limited number of #2 trees for variety and for those who prefer thinner or less dense trees. The USDA grades generally provide more info about fullness, density, pruning, etc. What does this mean for you? It means that you are supporting our family farm and the Shatley's family farm that both pay their employees fare wages, use ethical and the cleanest pest control and fertilization practices, and abide by the strict standards set forth by both organizations. We also receive several fresh cut deliveries per season so you are always receiving the freshest trees available.
